Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images that can support clinical decision-making without using ionising radiation. The examination requested depends on the patient’s symptoms, medical history and the clinician’s assessment.

Clinical assessment supportHelps clinicians investigate symptoms and complement findings from medical history, physical examination and laboratory tests.
Pregnancy-related imagingWhere clinically indicated and available, ultrasound can support assessment and monitoring during pregnancy.
Abdominal & soft-tissue assessmentSelected examinations may help evaluate abdominal organs and other soft-tissue concerns according to clinical need.
Professional review & referralFindings are considered alongside the wider clinical picture. Patients who need advanced imaging or specialist care are referred appropriately.
